Mission Statement

Galavant creates intimate, outdoor pop-up experiences, carefully curating diverse live music and multidisciplinary art events. We seek to empower artists, enhance exposure, and provide performance opportunities while strengthening community bonds and fostering a deeper appreciation for live performance culture.

Our purpose is to provide a space for community to be present during artistic expression and to cultivate a lively arts environment that enriches artists, audiences, and communities collectively.

Founding Story

Galavant grew out of years of hands-on experience in Santa Barbara’s live music community. Before founding the organization, Barrett and Sophia Taylor produced popup concerts through the SoFar Sounds network — Sophia handling artist bookings and venue partnerships, Barrett managing sound production and event operations. That work shaped a clear view of what live music events could be when the artist experience was treated as the priority rather than an afterthought.

When the pandemic shut down live events in 2020, Barrett and Sophia used the pause to build something of their own. Galavant launched in 2021 as a nonprofit dedicated to producing intimate outdoor music and art events where artists are compensated fairly, supported with professional-grade production, and never asked to carry the promotional burden. The philosophy is simple: create the conditions for a great night and trust the community to show up.

That trust has held. Over 42 events and four years of programming, Galavant has welcomed more than 800 unique community members — all through organic, word-of-mouth growth with zero paid advertising. Every show is booked with curatorial intention, every artist is treated with the same standard of care, and the format remains rooted in what made it work from the beginning: bringing people together to be present for live art.

Founder

Barrett Taylor

Barrett Taylor fell in love with live sound working at venues and music festivals around Santa Barbara, and never looked back. What started as a curiosity about the gear behind the music became a calling to make that world accessible to the artists who need it most. He co-founded Galavant with his wife Sophia to strip away the technical barriers between performers and their audiences, creating spaces where the only thing that matters is the moment the music hits the air.
Chief Engineer

Russ Custillo

Russ Castillo was the last chief engineer at Producer's Workshop, the legendary Hollywood recording studio at 6035 Hollywood Boulevard where some of the most iconic records of the 20th century were made. His work placed him at the center of sessions for Pink Floyd's The Wall, The Doors' Live at the Hollywood Bowl, and Liberace's final five studio albums. The artists and producers who came through those doors trusted Russ not just to run the room, but to understand what they were reaching for and deliver it through the signal chain.

That instinct was shaped by years working alongside chief engineer Bud Wyatt, whose philosophy defined the Producer's Workshop sound. Wyatt believed the shortest, cleanest path between microphone and tape produced the most honest recording, and he modified every piece of gear in the room to serve that conviction. Russ absorbed that discipline firsthand and carried it through the studio's most prolific years, developing a rare ability to function as both technician and creative partner across sessions at the highest level of the industry.

Through his partnership with Galavant, Russ's knowledge and methodology now serve as the foundation for the organization's Young Musicians Workshop and artist development programming in Santa Barbara. His firsthand experience with the techniques, workflows, and philosophy that defined Producer's Workshop informs every aspect of the initiative. His involvement isn't advisory. It's foundational.

Keeping Focus with the Artist

Galavant brings people together to be present for artistic expression. We create spaces where artists and audiences share the same moment, and everything we do grows from that.
